Sandy, Pepper & the Eclipse

Join two dogs as they spend a day in the house...but not just any day...

This is the day of the solar eclipse!

Mom leaves for the morning, mentioning that she is keeping Sandy (a wise, older golden retriever) and Pepper (an inquisitive, young beagle) inside so they won't hurt their eyes by looking at the eclipse. Pepper wants to know what a solar eclipse is, how it happens, and how it effects humans, animals, and the Earth.

Sandy uses household and neighborhood objects to define and explain how the scale and motion of the moon, earth, and sun create eclipses. Full and partial eclipses are thoroughly discussed, as are safe viewing methods.

Pepper is in awe of Sandy's knowledge...Sandy is impressed with Pepper's ability to learn. Dog humor abounds.

Mom returns, Dad comes home from work and they turn on the TV news. The lead story is about the day's eclipse...the TV newscaster verifies Sandy's information...Pepper is again impressed...but now wants to know how those little people get in the TV...another story for another day says Sandy.

Laura Kyro (Saint Louis Science Center) has authored this script to present solid scientific content in the left hand-right hand format with all visuals and timings annotated for two levels of production...one level for simply equipped sites...and another level for adding pans, all skies, and special effects. The content is supported by 57 wonderful slides, most featuring custom, original artwork designed for us by Dan Hawkins (Specquest Planetarium). Sandy and Pepper are represented in a variety of photographic poses, not as cartoon type characters. Illustrated household and neighborhood objects with terrific mixed medium astronomical and title slides complete the visual support. Superb professional voice talent and an original custom score by award winning Jeff Bowen are enhanced by the unique sound effect work of Mark Evans...and all digitally recorded and mastered!

This program is designed for grades 1-6 and for family viewing, and has met the approval of a four member review committee. SP&E provides very good explanations of what is the Earth...what is the Moon...and what is the Sun as well as how these bodies move in space. Excellent for classroom use or as preshows, audiences will find the program to be exciting and entertaining while filled with understandable scientific information.
